Pimp my blog?

Hi guys,
I’d like to talk about the word ‘Pimping’ since it’s a funny term to use on the internet. For those of you who don’t know ‘Pimp’ is slang for shameless self-promotion. You know the show ‘Pimp my ride’ on MTV. Well, if you’ve never seen it then ‘Pimp my ride’ is a TV show where each episode consists of taking one crappy looking car and transforming it into an ultra funky chariot of desire. It’s really about turning a students or down on their luck youngster driver into a player.
And nowadays we tend to see the same thing happen with blogs.
We all want to be players on the blogosphere field and reach a status where we can attract a traffic frenzy of eager readers with a post of an article or a launch of a product. And to get to that stage we are willing to do anything to pull in the punters and attract attention, including - pimping our blog!
We are all keen on earning a living in these desperate times. And like the saying goes, desperate times calls for desperate measures and sometimes you can smell the sense of desperation on some blogs, where their methods of blogging is pimping it to high heaven until it looks like a colourful benetton ad with the latest and greatest sales product flavours of the year.
Plenty of newbies are under the impression that a good looking blog, one that has a face lift, with the fancy banners, cool links and styled icons will attract traffic quicker, but I beg to differ. Like the saying goes its not quality but quantity that makes it happen and the same goes for your blog.
Now I’m not denigrating anyones blog here, and even though there are some top notch bloggers out there who have been doing it for years and do tend to promote quite a few products on their blog that’s not to say that they don’t have good quality content to go with it.
My thinking is that if you are a relatively new blogger, like myself, and are looking to attract traffic without creating the feeling that you’ve just opened a market stall with the latest craze, then pimping your blog with colourful banners and numerous google ad sense just don’t make… sense! - if you know what I mean
I believe that by first establishing yourself as a blogger with a unique voice, that can connect with an audience, and share indispensable gems of advice about your niche, you’re then in a better position to suggest and recommend products (which I hope you’ve tested yourself) to your audience and have a better chance of them buying off of you.
That’s just my thought. I myself, prefer to stick to creating exciting and entertaining content and abstain from advertising too much on my blog, to begin with, and if anyone disagrees or has something of value to add to this post then I’d be happy to hear your voice

regards
Che Guy
