What the Niche…?

Hi guys,

So, now that you’ve decided that you’re going to go ahead and get your blog up and running you now need to find something to talk about.
Hmmm, lets discuss the niche your going to go for and the definition of niche marketing for those who are new to the concept.

The definition is actually quite a  simple one. According to Wikipedia it is a way of addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers. You can make it profitable even though they are by nature small in comparison to the mainstream marketplace but you have to do your due diligence and research the market first to make sure that there is a sizeable audience for your niche.
 
So, the ideal niche market is one where there is an interest from a small but sizable group of individuals who have a strong desire for what you offer and no one is fulfilling their needs.
They are going to be your target market - a group of potential customers who share common characteristics making them especially receptive to your product, service or opportunity.

Phew, I trust this makes sense. Some of you might already know what niche you’d be good at promoting via your blog and some of you might need to do some brainstorming and maybe even
some soul searching.
I can hear some of you saying that you have no idea what to blog about so please stop thinking that way and get ready for your first challenge.

I want you to write down a list of your hobbies, passions, experiences, education and skills that you have accumulated over your existence on this planet. You might do work in a particular sector that you know really well or you might be passionate about learning or achieving something new, which can also become the topic of your blog.

Here are a couple of examples: if your New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking then you do a blog about how you’re planning to quit, this is also another great way of holding yourself accountable to the people out there reading your blog. Or if you want to lose weight have a blog where your readers follow your every move about your diet routine, exercise regime and track the amount of weight you are losing on a daily, preferably weekly, basis.
These are just two examples but you can see the possibilities are endless so please don’t tell me that you haven’t got any ideas on what to blog.
Remember, you don’t necessarily have to be good at it you just need to find a topic, project, an idea that you are passionate about and dedicate the time and effort to make it happen. And above all, please make sure it’s enjoyable and FUN to do, even if its quitting smoking or losing weight make it a challenge but try and have fun doing it.

I want you to do me a favour right now and take a break, a 15 minute break and write down 20 things that you like, enjoy doing, are good at, or are interested in achieving. You will probably find that the first ten are the easiest and getting the other 10 are a bit trickier but stick with it and do a list of 20. Then narrow down the list to the ones you feel you’d be really passionate writing about on your blog. And continue narrowing down the list until you find the ONE that really rocks your noodle and that you’d enjoy and have fun writing about and sticking with for the long term.

Food for thought? So I want you to to have a niche to work on by my next post and don’t delay. Once you’ve decided on a niche do some research on the web and find out the sort of interest there is out there for this type of niche.
